Portsmouth's Championship match against Charlton Athletic was halted due to a medical emergency, when a Charlton supporter suffered a serious illness. The match was stopped while the supporter received treatment, and was subsequently postponed. Charlton later confirmed that the fan had passed away in hospital despite the efforts of medical staff at the scene. Portsmouth players and staff showed patience and understanding as the tragedy unfolded. The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could. The game was suspended with just 12 minutes on the clock as the medical teams went to help the fan suffering a medical emergency in the lower tier of the Covered End stand. Both sides stayed on the pitch for around seven more minutes before referee Matthew Donohue ordered the players to leave the field in the 19th minute. The supporter was seen taken away on a stretcher by paramedics after around 12 minutes of treatment. Portsmouth added their condolences in a post on social media, once news of the death emerged. The club's statement read: 'Pompey are devastated to learn that the Charlton supporter taken ill at today's game has passed away.' A minute's applause had been held before the game for former Charlton players Billy Bonds and Marvin Hinton, who both passed away recently. The match will be rescheduled in due course. Portsmouth had the better of the early going, with Addicks centre-back Lloyd Jones picking up a yellow card. The incident occurred at the Valley, Charlton's home ground, on Saturday. The exact date of the rescheduled match has not been announced yet. Portsmouth will face Charlton again in the future, and the club hopes that the match will be played without any incidents. The safety of the fans is the top priority for both clubs. Portsmouth's manager and players were not available for comment after the match. The club's officials expressed their sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased fan. The incident is a reminder of the importance of medical emergency preparedness in stadiums. Portsmouth's next match will be announced soon, and the club hopes to get back to winning ways.
