Portsmouth have completed the signing of midfielder Odin Bailey on a three-year contract, adding Championship depth after his release from Stockport at the end of last season.

Bailey, 26, arrives at Fratton Park having spent last term with League One side Stockport, where he made over 100 league appearances and helped them win the League Two title in 2024. His move to Pompey marks the end of a stressful free-agent spell that tested his mental approach to the game.

What did Bailey say about his Portsmouth switch?

Bailey told BBC Radio Solent that Portsmouth were the only club he wanted once talks turned serious. “It’s a club I’ve always looked out for,” he said. “It’s one I made my debut against, so I’ve always kept an eye on how they’re doing. To actually be here is a proud moment for me and my family.”

The midfielder made his senior bow in a Carabao Cup loss to Pompey in August 2019 while on loan from Birmingham City. His arrival at Fratton Park comes as Portsmouth sit 18th in the Championship with 55 points from 46 games and a goal difference of -15.

How did Bailey cope with being a free agent?

Bailey described his first spell as a free agent as “very stressful,” adding that injuries during the season would have compounded the pressure. “These things play on your mind,” he said. “It’s been a learning curve about managing thoughts and emotions while still trying to perform.”

He made 100+ league appearances for Stockport and lifted the League Two trophy in 2024, but his release in the summer left him without a club until Pompey’s interest crystallised.

What’s next for Portsmouth?

Portsmouth’s next outing is an away trip to Aldershot Town on 15 July 2026, a tie that follows a recent run of two wins and two draws from the last five matches. The club sits 40 points behind league leaders Coventry and will look to tighten their defence after conceding 64 goals this season.

Bailey’s arrival adds competition in midfield as Pompey aim to climb clear of the bottom three with 14 wins, 13 draws and 19 losses so far.
