Former Pompey players seek new clubs through PFA training camp
Ben Close, Lee Evans, and Andre Green have joined the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) summer training camp as they search for new clubs. The trio, all former Portsmouth players, are utilizing the 10-week program at Champney’s Springs in Leicestershire to maintain fitness and showcase their skills to potential suitors. Portsmouth, finishing 18th in the Championship last season with 55 points (14W-13D-19L), are now preparing for their 2026-27 campaign, which kicks off on August 15.
Who are the players involved?
Ben Close, a midfielder, spent five years at Portsmouth, making 124 appearances before his departure. Lee Evans, a fan favorite, contributed to the Blues’ League One title success and is now seeking his ninth career club. Andre Green, a winger, last played for Portuguese side Avs Futebol and is looking for a fresh start after a loan spell at Portsmouth in 2018-19.
What is the PFA training camp?
The PFA’s summer training camp, now in its third year, offers out-of-contract players access to spa and gym facilities, strength and conditioning sessions, and training matches. The program has previously helped players like John Swift, who returned to Portsmouth in July 2025 after utilizing the camp.
What’s next for Portsmouth?
Portsmouth’s pre-season preparations continue with a trip to Germany to face FC Darmstadt. The Blues will begin their Championship campaign with a home match against Cardiff on September 5, following their Carabao Cup first-round fixture.
