Portsmouth secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship on Tuesday night. Terry Devlin's late volley cancelled out Jordan James's second-half opener to earn a valuable point at Molineux.

The result leaves John Mousinho's side 13th in the league table with 14 points from their opening 10 matches. They are now unbeaten in two league games ahead of a key home fixture against Millwall this Saturday.

How the draw unfolded

Wolves, managed by César Peixoto, dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Portsmouth defence for much of a forgettable first half. The hosts' best early chance saw Nasser Djiga head wide, while Portsmouth's Rocco Shein fired a low shot just off target.

Peixoto made a double change at the interval, introducing Tawanda Chirewa and Jordan James. The move paid off when James broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, firing home a fierce low drive after a neat one-two with Fer López. The goal came after a period of sustained pressure from the hosts, who had seen several crosses cleared and a long-range effort from Chirewa comfortably saved.

Portsmouth had failed to register a shot on target until the 86th minute. That changed when a deep free-kick was headed clear to the edge of the box, where Devlin chested the ball down and volleyed expertly into the corner for the equaliser. Tensions flared at the final whistle, with both benches being pulled apart and referee James Linington issuing several cautions.

League context and next steps

The draw extends Portsmouth's recent form to two wins, two draws and one loss from their last five outings. They have scored 13 and conceded 13 this season, sitting nine points behind early leaders Swansea City. Wolves, meanwhile, remain in 8th place with 17 points, having now drawn three of their last four home matches.

Portsmouth now turn their attention to a key home clash with 12th-placed Millwall at Fratton Park on Saturday, 24 October. Manager John Mousinho confirmed post-match that midfielder Tom Lowery is a doubt for the weekend after being forced off with a hamstring issue, adding to the existing injury list.
