Portsmouth striker Tayo Singerr will undergo surgery on his hamstring after suffering another injury setback during a loan spell. The 18-year-old's latest problem occurred just minutes into his debut for National League South side AFC Totton, forcing him into an early return to Fratton Park.
Manager John Mousinho confirmed the news in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers. Singerr had only joined Totton on a season-long loan earlier this month, having recovered from a separate hamstring issue that kept him out of Portsmouth's entire pre-season. That initial problem was sustained during a previous loan at Gosport Borough at the end of last term.
Loan spell cut short
His move to Totton was announced hours before their trip to Weston-Super-Mare, where he was named on the bench. Singerr was introduced as a substitute in the 57th minute with his new side 3-0 down, but was forced off through injury just nine minutes later. He was subsequently absent from the squad for Totton's 1-0 defeat to Slough last Saturday, with boss Scott Rendell confirming the absence was injury-related.
Mousinho explained that this is a new issue, distinct from the one that sidelined the teenager over the summer. "It is what it is, young Tayo has had a hamstring injury before, but it’s not the same leg, not the same injury, not the same hamstring," the manager said. He added wryly, "It’s just our luck at the minute with centre-forwards we have signed."
The surgery represents a significant blow for a player who announced his arrival in August 2025 by scoring on his debut against Reading in the Carabao Cup at 17 years and 10 months old. After a prolific first half of last season on loan at Moneyfields, where he scored 14 goals in 18 games, he was recalled in January. Singerr made his Championship debut as a late substitute against Bristol City on New Year's Day and later signed his first professional contract.
His progress has now been halted again. Mousinho had hoped to reward Singerr with a move higher up the pyramid after his Gosport stint, but the young forward must now focus on a return to full fitness. Portsmouth, who sit 18th in the Championship with seven points from six games, host Blackburn Rovers this Saturday.
