Portsmouth midfielder John Swift faces a four to six week layoff after twisting his knee in a non-contact training incident last week. The 31-year-old, who joined on a free transfer from West Brom last summer, has been limited to just 24 minutes of Championship action this season.

Head coach John Mousinho confirmed the recovery timeline, stating the club will take a cautious approach. "It's going to be four to six weeks and we're probably going to be on the cautious side at the back end of that," Mousinho said. He described the moment of injury as alarming. "It was not a nice looking injury as he went down without anyone near him. We feared the worst at that moment."

Further assessment revealed the injury is not as severe as initially feared, but it remains a significant setback for the player and the squad.

Squad impact

Swift's absence further depletes a midfield already missing several players through injury. He was not in the squad for the recent 3-2 win over Sheffield United, a result that lifted Pompey to 16th in the Championship with 11 points from nine games. The club's current squad list shows a lengthy injury roster including Conor Shaughnessy, Josh Murphy, and Connor Ogilvie.

Mousinho acknowledged the timing is frustrating, with games on the horizon that would have suited Swift's technical ability. Despite his limited minutes, the manager praised the player's professionalism, noting he has "kept his head down" and stayed ready. Mousinho added.

Immediate outlook

Portsmouth's next challenge is a trip to face 20th-placed Norwich City this Saturday. The team will check on Keshi Anderson, who was forced off late against Sheffield United but is expected to be available. With Swift unavailable and other absences, squad depth will be tested during a period where the team's form reads two wins, two draws, and one loss from their last five outings.

Mousinho confirmed the club will not rush to sign a free agent as cover, instead looking to utilise the existing group. Fans can view the full upcoming fixtures schedule on the club site.

John Swift is out of contract at the end of the season. Portsmouth travel to Carrow Road on October 17.
