Portsmouth loanee Josh Knight made his competitive debut for Reading FC on Tuesday night. The 29-year-old defender played 77 minutes in the 3-0 EFL Trophy defeat to Chelsea's under-21s at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Reading made eleven changes for the match following a 5-1 league win over MK Dons, with nine senior professionals starting. Among them was Jacob Brown, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth from Luton Town.

Knight joined Reading on loan from Portsmouth in the summer after finding opportunities limited at Fratton Park. He had been left out of eight consecutive match-day squads before finally getting his chance. The defender, who cost Portsmouth around £1 million from Hannover 96 in 2025, remains under contract with the Blues until 2028. His loan move is intended to provide him with regular football and add experience to Reading's back line as they handle a busy fixtures schedule.

Reading manager Leam Richardson highlighted Knight's involvement as a positive from the fixture. "But yeah, he's going to be a good player for us," Richardson said. The manager acknowledged the defender still needs to improve his pace and match sharpness, describing the valuable game time as important for his development. Richardson's side now turns its focus back to the league campaign, where detailed stats will track their progress.

Knight's departure comes as Portsmouth themselves face a shortage in central defence. Injuries to Benjy Arthur and Conor Shaughnessy, have left the squad thin at the back ahead of their next Championship fixture. Portsmouth, currently 20th in the standings with eight points from eight games, host Sheffield United at Fratton Park on Wednesday, 14 October. Their recent form shows one win, two draws, and two defeats from the last five matches.
