A Portsmouth FC fan has been banned from attending football matches for three years after throwing a crutch at a 16-year-old ball boy during a match against Southampton. The incident occurred in January at Fratton Park. The fan, Michael Wilson, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and throwing a missile onto a football playing area at Southampton Magistrates' Court. Wilson, a builder and dad-of-two, has previous convictions in 2002 and one in 2008 for a public order offence. He was ordered to pay a fine of £865 and compensation of £200 to the ball boy for the assault. Including the surcharge and court costs, Wilson must pay £1,496. The ball boy described being made fun of for what happened at school, particularly as it was 'recorded for all to see'. He said he already suffered from anxiety, and this incident made it worse. Wilson's last offence was almost two decades ago. He would like to apologise to the member of staff that was struck with the crutch. Barry Keel, mitigating, told the court that his client recognised that he had 'let himself down badly'. District Judge Henry Gordon said: 'It was, I hope you appreciate, an incredibly stupid thing to have done.'
